History
Balık ekmek means "fish bread": a fillet of grilled or fried fish, usually mackerel, in a half loaf of crusty bread with onion, lettuce and lemon. It is the street food of Istanbul's waterfront. For decades it was cooked on small boats rocking at the Eminönü pier beside the Galata Bridge, the fish grilled on deck and passed to customers on the quay; the boats are now moored and decorated as part of the scene. Istanbul has eaten fish from the Bosphorus for as long as the city has existed, and the sandwich is a cheap and fast way to do it. It is often eaten with a glass of pickle juice, turşu suyu.
