The Map of Dishes project operates Map of Dishes at mapofdishes.com. The site has no ads and no tracking cookies, and you can use the whole map without an account. An account is optional: it keeps your want-to-try list, eaten stamps, ratings and reviews. This page describes what actually happens when you use it.

What we collect

This site does not run analytics and does not set cookies.

What stays in your browser

Your browser remembers whether you prefer the flat map or the globe, which language you picked and whether you closed the language suggestion. If you mark dishes before signing in, those marks are also kept only in this browser (local storage). Nothing here is sent to us unless you sign in.

If you create an account

You can sign in with Google or with a one-time code sent to your email. We then store your email address, the nickname shown next to your reviews (by default "Traveler" and four characters, never your name or email), and your marks: which dishes you want to try or have eaten, your star rating, whether you ate it in its home country, and the place and date if you add them. When you first sign in, marks saved in this browser are copied to your account. We also record which page and link you arrived from (for example a search engine or a site that linked to us, never the full address or what you searched for), your country from the network, language and device type, so we know how people find the map. With Google sign-in, Google tells us your email address and name; we do not receive your Google password or contacts.

Ratings and reviews are public

Star ratings count towards each dish’s average, shown once at least five people have rated it. Reviews are shown on the dish with your nickname, star rating and date. Your list of marks (your passport) is private and only you can see it. Reviews reported by several people are hidden until we look at them.

If you email us, we receive your email address and message and use them only to reply.

Recordings and photos

Photos and pronunciation recordings are copied from Wikimedia Commons and served from this site, so playing a recording does not contact any other service.

Service providers

The site is served through Cloudflare, which processes requests to deliver pages and protect the site and may process them outside the European Union. Accounts, marks and reviews are stored on our own server in the Netherlands (hosted by Hostinger). Google handles Google sign-in. Sign-in codes are sent by our email delivery provider. Email sent to contact@mapofdishes.com is received through Cloudflare Email Routing.

How long we keep it

Marks and reviews are kept until you remove them or delete your account. You can remove any mark or review yourself from the dish. Server logs are kept for a short time for security.

Your choices

You can remove a mark or review at any time from the dish. To get a copy of your data, correct it or delete your whole account, write to contact@mapofdishes.com from the address you sign in with; we act within 30 days.

Children

The map can be used by anyone, but accounts are for people aged 16 and over. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13 and delete it if we learn of it.

Changes

We update this page when our practices change and show the date above.
