History
Tiramisù is layers of savoiardi biscuits soaked in coffee and a cream of mascarpone, egg yolks and sugar, dusted with cocoa. The name means "pick me up". It is a young dish compared to most Italian classics. The best-known story places its birth at the restaurant Le Beccherie in Treviso in the late 1960s or early 1970s, but towns in Friuli, such as Tolmezzo, claim earlier versions, and the two regions have argued about it publicly. In 2017 the Italian government added it to the list of traditional food products of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. It spread across the world from the 1980s and is now one of the most widely known Italian desserts.
