History
The Cornish pasty is a half-moon of shortcrust pastry filled with diced beef, potato, swede and onion, seasoned with salt and pepper, crimped along one side and baked. It became the lunch of Cornwall's tin miners in the 18th and 19th centuries: a complete meal that could be carried underground and stayed warm for hours. Popular stories say the thick crimped edge was a handle that miners held with dirty hands and threw away. Cornish miners took pasties to mines in America, Australia and Mexico. Since 2011, only pasties made in Cornwall to the traditional recipe can be called Cornish pasties in the EU and UK.
