History
A rolex is an omelette with tomato, onion and cabbage rolled up in a chapati. The name is a play on "rolled eggs". It began as a quick, cheap snack in the 1990s and 2000s, credited to chapati sellers in Busoga in eastern Uganda; it spread to Wandegeya, near Makerere University in Kampala, where students needed fast meals on small budgets. It is now Uganda's best-known street food, cooked to order on hot griddles at roadside stalls across the country. In 2016 Uganda's tourism board began promoting it as a national symbol, and Kampala holds a Rolex Festival. Variations include the Kikomando, chapati with beans.
