History
Lángos is a disc of yeasted dough, sometimes made with potato, deep-fried until puffed and golden, then rubbed with garlic water and topped with sour cream and grated cheese. Its name comes from láng, "flame": it was originally baked in front of the flames of the bread oven on baking day, with the last bits of dough, as a breakfast for the family. Frying in oil came later. It is the classic snack of Hungarian markets, beaches and Lake Balaton, and is also popular in neighbouring countries that were once part of the Hungarian kingdom.
