History
A casado is a plate of rice, black beans, fried plantain, salad and a tortilla, with a meat or fish such as beef, chicken, pork or fried fish. It is the standard lunch of Costa Rica, served in sodas, the small family restaurants found in every town. The name means married man, and one explanation is that customers asked to be fed like married men, who got full home-cooked meals; another is that rice and beans are married together. Casados are cheap and filling, and the plate varies with the soda and the region. On the Caribbean coast, rice and beans are cooked in coconut milk.
