History
The Nanaimo bar is a no-bake dessert of three layers: a base of chocolate, crumbs, coconut and nuts; a middle of yellow custard-flavoured butter icing; and a top of chocolate. It is named after the city of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, and the earliest known printed recipes appear in local fundraising cookbooks in the 1950s. Its exact origin is unknown, and recipes from that era call it by other names too. In 1986 the city ran a contest to find the definitive recipe, and visitors can now follow a Nanaimo bar trail through local cafés.
