History
Mici, also called mititei, "little ones", are small skinless sausages of minced beef, often mixed with lamb and pork, seasoned with garlic, black pepper, thyme and other spices, plus a little bicarbonate of soda that keeps them springy. They are grilled over charcoal and eaten with mustard, bread and cold beer. A popular story says mici were invented in the late 1800s at a Bucharest inn called La Iordachi, when the cook ran out of sausage casings and grilled the meat without them; the tale is often told but hard to prove. Today mici are Romania's grill food, sold at markets, stadiums, roadside stands and festivals, and Labour Day on 1 May is traditionally celebrated with mici in the countryside.
