History
The francesinha, "little French girl", is Porto's giant sandwich: bread layered with steak, ham, sausage and linguiça, covered in melted cheese, often with a fried egg on top, and drowned in a hot sauce of tomato, beer and spices, with fries. It was created in the 1950s by Daniel da Silva, a Portuguese emigrant who had lived in France and Belgium and wanted to make a local version of the croque-monsieur, at the restaurant A Regaleira in Porto. Every café has its own secret sauce. It is eaten with a cold beer.
