History
Momo are dumplings of thin wheat dough filled with minced buffalo, chicken, pork or vegetables, spiced with onion, garlic, ginger and coriander, and usually steamed. They are linked to Tibet, and Newar merchants who traded between Kathmandu and Lhasa are thought to have brought the dumplings back to the Kathmandu Valley, where they took on local spices. Today momo are the most popular snack of Nepal, served everywhere with a tomato and sesame achar dipping sauce. Versions include fried momo, jhol momo in a spicy soup, and chilli momo. Nepalis abroad have spread them widely.
