History
Lahpet is fermented tea leaves, a food that Myanmar eats as well as drinks. Young leaves are steamed and packed into pits or jars to ferment for months. Lahpet thoke is a salad of these leaves mixed with fried garlic, peas, peanuts, sesame, dried shrimp, chilli, tomato and cabbage. The tea plant grows in the Shan hills, and the custom of eating it is old: lahpet was a traditional offering in disputes, and accepting it signalled that the matter was settled. It is served as a snack at homes, in the dry form arranged in a lacquerware box with separate compartments, and offered to guests.
