History
Nasi lemak means "rich rice": rice cooked in coconut milk with pandan leaf, served with spicy sambal, fried anchovies, roasted peanuts, cucumber and a boiled egg, traditionally wrapped in a banana leaf. It is a dish of the Malay people, and the earliest written descriptions come from colonial-era accounts of Malay food in the early 20th century. The packet was a cheap, filling breakfast for farmers and fishermen, and it is still sold that way at roadside stalls. Today it is eaten at any hour, often with fried chicken or beef rendang, and many Malaysians call it their national dish.
