History
Kelewele is ripe plantain cut into cubes, seasoned with ginger, chilli, onion and spices such as cloves or nutmeg, and fried until dark and caramelised. It is a snack of Ghana's evening streets, especially in Accra, where sellers fry it in large pans and wrap portions in paper. It is often eaten with roasted peanuts. Plantains are a staple in southern Ghana and are used in many dishes. Kelewele is especially popular around Christmas time, and Ghanaians abroad often describe it as one of the first things they eat when they return.
