History
The Australian meat pie is a hand-sized pie of minced or diced beef in thick gravy, in a short pastry base with a flaky top, eaten with tomato sauce. British settlers brought pies to the colonies in the 19th century, and pie carts selling them hot became a fixture of city streets. In the 20th century it became the food of the football: a pie at the Australian rules match is a ritual, and millions are eaten each year. South Australia's "pie floater" serves it in a bowl of green pea soup.
