History
A bunny chow is a hollowed-out quarter, half or whole loaf of white bread filled with curry, often mutton, chicken or beans, with the scooped-out bread on top to mop up the sauce. It was born in Durban, home of the largest Indian community in South Africa, in the 1940s. The most common story says Indian restaurants used the bread as a container so workers could carry food away, at a time when apartheid laws kept them from sitting down in many places. The name may come from "bania", a caste of Indian traders. It is still eaten by hand, starting from the top.
