History
Koko Samoa is a drink made from cocoa beans grown in Samoa, roasted and ground into a paste, then dissolved in hot water and sweetened with sugar. It is drunk warm, and the cocoa butter gives it an oily surface. Cocoa was brought to Samoa by German colonists in the late 1800s and grown on plantations; Samoan cocoa was once prized in Europe. Today most of the crop is turned into koko Samoa, sold at markets as small blocks or balls of cocoa paste. It is often served in the morning with bread or pancakes, and koko alaisa, rice cooked in cocoa, is a popular breakfast.
