History
Currywurst was invented in West Berlin in 1949. Herta Heuwer ran a snack stand in the Charlottenburg district and, according to her account, got ketchup, curry powder and Worcestershire sauce from British soldiers and mixed them into a sauce that she poured over a sliced grilled pork sausage. She later registered the sauce as Chillup. It became the cheap fast food of postwar Berlin and is now eaten all over Germany, especially in Berlin and the Ruhr. It is served with fries or a bread roll. Berlin had a museum dedicated to it from 2009 to 2018.
